Overview:  In the design community, there is still widespread confusion, skepticism, and resistance to the value of what is known as Evidence-Based Design (EBD).  So a gap has existed between the design community and needed research of behavior in the built environment. Today’s focus on patient-centered care has led to the resurgence of the importance of incorporating the arts into healthcare environments. So, practitioners need to understand the purpose of art integration, what type of art is appropriate, and how to evaluate it based on EBD. This session provides clarification of what constitutes EBD, and how it applies to art selection, and how to use research to support design decisions. It will also provide ways to assess the success of an arts program.
